Description
Offered for sale is an early Coleman Model 242 (no letter)single mantle lantern. The 242 series was the first single mantle lantern type that Coleman produced. Collectors argue that it is still the best single mantle design from Coleman with the twin air tubes and cast brass mixing chamber. The NL (or No Letter) designation is often added by collectors to differentiate this from the other models in this series with a letter suffix (242A, B, C, etc.) This lantern has a date stamp of 2
6
for
June
, 1932
. This was the first year of 242 production.
This lantern
is in overall good condition.
It has been given a bath, but that is about it. It came from the collection of the late Ernie Hiatt of Rochester, IN.
The burner frame has much of the original nickel plating remaining on the air tubes and base plate.
The nickel on the fount will polish up to some degree, with some minor freckling.
There are
a couple tiny dings
, so please view all the photos
carefully.
The fount looks clean inside, but I have made no effort to clean it. The pump is the correct original style with a non-return valve (NRV). The pump leather is in decent shape, but the NRV needs a new pip and I did not attempt to pressurize the fount.
The vent is in
poor
condition
with
chipping on top, missing enamel spots on the edges and most of the enamel is gone from the mesh
. The top of the vent appears to have 3 spot welds on the underside, but it is solid. It is missing the "button" that fits into the top of the frame. There is no globe. The bail is the correct "droop" style for this date of production.
This would be a good project for someone looking for this model to fill their
collection
.
